Alvaro Ruiz was appointed Global Manager- Banking & Payments Europe for UST in 2022. In this role, Alvaro is responsible for defining UST Banking & Payments industry domain strategy, offering and focus, market positioning, geographic expansion and sales and go-to-market strategy.
Before joining UST, Alvaro worked at BBVA as Global Head of Infrastructure and IT Operations, responsible for the strategic direction and execution of BBVA’s worldwide IT operations.
Alvaro brings more than 20 years of IT experience and has a diverse background in both consulting/services and financial services institutions leadership roles with extensive experience in cloud architectures, legacy coexistence, core banking systems, efficiency programs and quality production management. At BBVA he has been in charge of infrastructure digital transformation as well as oversight for all information systems, he has been also driving optimization and efficiency across the enterprise.
Previously, Alvaro served as the global CIO for Santander Bank where he was responsible for Santander overall technology strategy and the definition and implementation of the digital transformation program. Within this program he was in charge of designing and developing the global cloud architecture, as well as re-defining the IT productivity, IT delivery and IT governance models.
Prior to Santander Bank, Alvaro served as Europe’s Banking Industry head at IBM GBS where he helped Tier I financial institutions in Europe in defining, launching and implementing their digital transformation programs around agile methodologies, cloud, devops and data.
Prior to IBM GBS, he held positions of increasing leadership in Accenture where he spent 12 years transforming banking and insurance institutions in Europe, North America, LatAm and APAC.
Passionate about technology and teamwork, Alvaro acts as senior advisor and board member for some fast growing IT companies and fintechs.
Alvaro has a PGD in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s degree in economy from Carlos III University of Madrid.
